A New Report Summarizing At Least 10 Years of Research On The Benefits of R-Alpha Lipoic, An Anti-Oxidant For Diabetics, Finds Its Clearest Benefit In Diabetic Neuropathy

Nutri-Med Logic Corp: A newly published report states the analysis of clinical trials of last 10 years relating to the benefits of R-Alpha Lipoic and the various claims made about it, such as improving Diabetic Polyneuropathy, eliminating free radicals, re-energizing vitamin C, vitamin E, and glutathione, boosting antioxidant defense through enhancing gene expression (Nrf-2) and moderating inflammation (NF-kB) resulted in Diabetic Polyneuropathy receiving the clearest benefit.
The report also states that R-Alpha Lipoic activates AMPK in skeletal muscles, which has many important metabolic consequences.
AMPK is a protein, which its activation results in Glycolysis (metabolism of glucose), Biogenesis of Mitochondria (formation of additional cellular energy plants), activation of GLUT-4 (glucose transport molecule), improving blood flow and metabolism of fatty acids (fat).
The activation of AMPK in skeletal muscle results in the reduction of corporal fat, which is an important property of R-Alpha Lipoic in Obesity.
The deposit of fat in the skeletal muscle emanates from redox imbalance (NAD/NADH), whereas glucose does not convert to energy rather it converts to palmitate (fat), which is, then, deposited into the skeletal muscles.

GLUT-4 is the molecule that brings the glucose inside the cells and its inhibition is equal to insulin resistance.
When the cells do not accept insulin, the blood glucose concentration elevates and high blood levels of glucose triggers the activation of Sorbitol-Aldosel Pathways, which converts excess glucose to fructose. The Sorbitol-Aldose Pathways exist in those cells that are independent of insulin, such as Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system. Excessive activation of this pathway results in the production of Aldehydes and Alcohol (sorbitol), which change the osmotic pressures of these cells, causing their demise, resulting in neuropathy (Nerve degeneration).
Prolonged exposure to palmitate also causes induction of ceramides, which are a signaling mechanism; ceramides interfere with the mRNA (messenger RNA) of insulin, required for the production of insulin. In another word, palmitate also causes an alteration in genetic expression of insulin, further, triggering the Sorbitol-Aldose Pathways. (3)
R-Alpha Lipoic (Also known as R-Lipoic Acid) is a redox agent, capable of correcting the NAD/NADH ratio, which its improper ratio is a key cause of conversion of glucose to palmitate (fat).
Studies have shown, unequivocally, that the Application of R-Alpha Lipoic has resulted in the reduction of corporal weight, in obese individual. (4)
It is important to note that most, if not all, relevant studies relating to Lipoic Acid and Diabetes or Diabetic Neuropathy were done via Intravenous Application, which is not permitted in the U.S, since R-Alpha Lipoic is a nutrient. The dietary supplementation of R-Alpha Lipoic most likely would not produce the same result, but none-the-less, it is a very beneficial dietary supplement for Diabetics and Obese individuals.
