BeWellBuzz.com Examines the Difference between Men and Womens Nutritional Needs
Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) February 20, 2012
Although men and women are both created equal in the eyes of society and United States Laws, they are highly different when it comes to each sexes’ nutritional needs. Recently an article at BeWellBuzz.com examined the many differences between the nutritional needs for both men and women and even which foods are better for both sexes.
It is a generally accepted medical practice in the field of health and nutrition that humans of any sex often enjoy longer, and more productive life when they follow balanced diets. However, due to subtle differences between a man and womans physical make up, there are many foods which are better for women to consume than men.
According to Pam Peeke, M.D., M.Ph., Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and author of the renowned Fight Fat After 40, women in particular need to consume particular groups of foods to help maintain energy levels, more so when they age. Though there are numerous super-foods which are beneficial for women of any age, there are a few in particular that can ward off breast cancer, osteoporosis, hot flashes, heart disease, and other conditions that commonly plague women.
When forming a list of must-have foods for women, it is important to consider the many cycles and phases in the female life including puberty, pregnancy, menopause and other hormonal changes. However, the popular Health and Wellness online portal BeWellBuzz.com has compiled a list of eight foods which are highly recommended for women regardless of age or hormonal levels.
Greens such as kale, spinach and broccoli almost always make it to innumerable super foods lists, and with good reason. Kale is replete with antioxidants, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K and is a God-send for those with bone and eye problems. Broccoli is rich in Vitamin C and beta carotene and is great for the skin. Spinach is packed with nutrients, and is high in Vitamin K, magnesium, calcium, beta carotene, Vitamin B, and folate. It boosts bone and eye health and is also highly recommended during pregnancy.
There is much more information included in this list as well as detailed information about advice, tips, suggestions and counselling in the areas of fitness, nutrition, holistic medicine and the latest development and findings in health science printed on the online pages of BeWellBuzz.com. the new health care law
In an interview today with Nebraska radio station KOGA, Nebraska`s Senator Ben Nelson said he worked to make sure the new health care law wasn`t a government takeover of health care, addressed some of its benefits for Nebraskans and concerns that have been raised about the law. Below are excerpts from the interview. Easy To Insure ME has the answers
Asked about those who are calling for a repeal and replacement, Senator Nelson pointed out that many of the provisions already in effect are making the health insurance market fairer for Nebraskans:
“For those who want to repeal it, it`s going to be interesting to see if they want to repeal this: banning insurers from preventing coverage due to pre-existing conditions. That`s in place. Allowing the purchase of insurance across state lines. . .¦Allowing¨ kids ¦to be on parent`s insurance¨ up until the age of 26. There are a lot of parents struggling right now. They paid for and borrowed a lot of money for a college education. They get out, they can`t find a job. They`d be kicked off the parent`s health insurance plan. And if they had a pre-existing condition, they wouldn`t qualify for individual insurance and if they didn`t have a job they wouldn`t qualify for group insurance. So they could be uninsured. That was taken care of. There were just a number of things that are already in place. . .Right now insurers cannot impose annual and lifetime caps on benefits. They can`t drop a person`s coverage just because they get sick. Those things are already in the -

The senator highlighted the fact that 220,000 Nebraskans – roughly the population of Lincoln – don`t have health insurance. By reducing that number, the new law aims to control costs that are currently passed on from those who don`t have health insurance to those who do:
“There are 220,000 Nebraskans who don`t currently have health insurance. . .The number of people who live in Lincoln don`t have health insurance in Nebraska. And we can`t take the approach of `hey, I have mine, now you get yours.` Many of them can`t qualify easily because of pre-existing conditions.
“When people don`t have health care coverage, they still get health care because they go to the emergency rooms and when they go to the emergency rooms they can`t pay. Guess who that cost is passed on to? Those of us that do have insurance and are able then to pay and our rates are higher.
“This ¦law¨ is aimed at changing that to level the playing field. If we didn`t do something, premium costs due to health care costs are going to continue going up at double digit levels. They`re going to go up in the meantime until all the insurance reforms kick in. But that won`t be because of health insurance reform. It will be because health costs continue to skyrocket. This is all aimed at reducing the impact of that and the increasing cost of health care, which is the driving force for our costs of health insurance.“
Asked about concerns people have with the new law, Nelson said that he worked to ensure that it is not a government takeover of health care and noted that it relies on the existing private system. He drew attention to the fact that some fears people raised haven`t come to pass such as “death panels,“ that he read the entire bill before it was passed, his role in shaping the bill and said that he will be watching the implementation of the bill carefully to make sure it follows Congress` intent:
“But I think people were warned about some things that never occurred. For example, where are the death panels? There aren`t any death panels. We also heard that the law would require people who want public health insurance to be implanted with a microchip. That hasn`t happened and it`s not going to happen. And where`s the rationing we were warned about? But perhaps the scariest thing we heard was a government takeover of health care. Have we seen that? No we haven`t. But it`s controversial; I understand. I worked hard against the public option, which was going to replace the private system. I worked hard to make sure we didn`t get that public option, that we have retained the private system. There`s no public option, no national health insurance plan, no single payer system in the law. So those are the kinds of things that could have happened but didn`t happen because I and some others fought very hard against those things happening.“

Macular Degeneration AMD Treatment Advances Mark Awareness in Maine
Portland, Maine (PRWEB) January 31, 2012
Eyecare Medical Group in Portland, Maine raises awareness about Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) as being the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in Americans older than 50.
As we begin the 2012 National Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Awareness Month we are continuing to feel even better about the prospects for treatment of Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), stated Maine Retina Specialist Scott Steidl, M.D. of Eyecare Medical Group in Portland, Maine. Although AMD is not curable, the data from the clinical trials that we monitor continues to strengthen our ability to choose treatment options for patients that can at a minimum prevent further vision loss from the disease and in many cases actually help recover lost vision, commented Dr. Steidl. By carefully reviewing the data from the Comparison of AMD Treatments Trial (CATT) as well as the FDA approval of the VEGF-Trap treatment we have been able to further refine the treatment protocols that help us get the best results for our patients, relayed Retina Specialist Jackie Nguyen, M.D.
Affecting more than two million people, AMD causes central vision to blur, but leaves peripheral vision intact. It is progressive and painless. There are two types of ARMD: dry and wet. Approximately 90 percent of people with ARMD have the dry form which results in gradual vision loss. Although only 10 percent of people with AMD have the wet form, it generally progresses much quicker than the dry form. Wet AMD is characterized by the growth of abnormal retinal blood vessels that leak blood or fluid, causing rapid and severe central vision loss. Patients can often reduce the risk of developing AMD by not smoking as well as working to eat a heart-healthy diet rich in fish, fruit and green leafy vegetables, avoiding foods with trans fats, exercising and controlling blood pressure and weight.
Patients older than 50 are encouraged to have a comprehensive, dilated eye examination every one to two years to ensure that AMD is detected and treated early. The key to successful treatment is early detection and intervention.
Eyecare Medical Group is a leading ophthalmology practice in Portland, Maine staffed by a team of eye care specialists including eye doctors who are fellowship trained glaucoma specialists, retina specialists, cornea specialists and cataract and lens implant specialists-all board certified Ophthalmologists-as well as Optometrists, Opticians, technical and administrative staff who provide eye examinations for adults and children, cataract surgery and intraocular lens implants, (IOL), laser vision correction such as LASIK, diagnosis and treatment of cornea disease including cornea transplants, care for diseases of the retina including diabetes and age related macular degeneration and diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma.

Exercise Body and Brain to Maintain Lifelong Cognitive Health
Copyright (c) 2008 SharpBrains
The American Medical News, a weekly newspaper for physicians published by the American Medical Association, just published an excellent article on the importance of Exercise – Physical and Mental:
A few quotes from the article titled “Steps to a nimble mind: Physical and mental exercise help keep the brain fit”:
“Until recently, conventional wisdom held that our brains were intractable, hard-wired computers. What we were born with was all we got. Age wore down memory and the ability to understand, and few interventions could reverse this process. But increasingly, evidence suggests that physical and mental exercise can alter specific brain regions, making radical improvements in cognitive function.”
and
“With nearly 72 million Americans turning 65 over the next two decades, physicians need the tools to handle growing patient concerns about how to best maintain brain health. Armed with this new brand of science, frontline physicians will be better equipped to address the needs of aging baby boomers, already in the throes of the brain fitness revolution.
One of the physicians quoted in the article is Gary J. Kennedy, MD, Director of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center in NYC and a professor in the Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
To put the AMA article in better perspective, we asked Dr. Kennedy a few follow-up questions. Below you have his questions.
Alvaro Fernandez (AF): Can you summarize how cognitive functions tend to evolve as we age?
]]>
Gary Kennedy (GK): As we age cognitive functions that rely on processing speed or reaction time decline, slow down. Problem solving speed declines. This is in part the result of frayed neuronal insulation as the myelin sheath surrounding the axons wears thin with advanced age or illness. However it is possible to specialize and optimize some cognitive processes through experience, practice and planning. For example vocabulary can increase to age 90 provided there is ongoing stimulation and motivation to learn. And the growth and development of new brain cells can be augmented with the stimulating effects of physical exercise.
AF: Now, there are very significant cognitive differences among individuals of the same age, so age itself is not the main predictor. Can you explain what may be?
GK: Age also has the effect of amplifying differences between individuals. This is the result of variability in aging itself, freedom from or accumulation of illnesses and injury, and life style. The influence of genetics is largely exhausted by the 6 and 7th decades of life which means that habitual activities and social relationships have a larger and larger impact resulting in greater and greater variability between individuals.
AF: Can you please explain the relationship between cognitive and emotional health (what we typically call “brain fitness”)
GK: Cognitive health requires motivation to sustain it and motivation depends on emotion and social reinforcement. Emotional self-regulation is not simply self control. Rather it is the capacity to respond to an emotional stress without prolonged loss of equilibrium. And it is the capacity to modify emotional reactions to resonate with others in the environment. Thought and feeling when linked together can be a powerful stimulus for learning, both for better and for worse. A positive outlook with an active response style is more protective than a tendency toward negativism and withdrawal.
AF: What advice would you give to people who want to maintain their brain in top shape?
GK: Simply finding a partner for regular physical activity is one of the best prescriptions for improving brain function. Staying emotionally, intellectually and socially engaged is also good advice. And the more the better. The brain is a muscle – use it or lose it.
AF: And what advice would you give to doctors and health professionals on how to help their patients?
GK: Doctors and all health professionals need to know how to motivate their patients to make the changes in life style that will promote healthy aging. Small, meaningful changes are relatively easy to achieve if the professional simply asks. Two straightforward examples: “how often do you enjoy an alcoholic beverage?” and “how often do you get a half hour of physical activity, walking or exercising?” can help the older person to minimize alcohol and maximize exercise. Brief interventions work surprisingly well.
AF: Thank you very mmuch for your time and advice.
GK: You are welcome.
